Babarada couldn't help but hum along to the choir by the broadcast station as he flew past the little groups of Faewish Sprites milling about the restored canopy platform, ears perked as he listened to the way they gossiped about this morning's prayer service he had requested of Giroda. After all, he was not merely historian now, but advisor to the Wish Master, and it wouldn't do for him to idle away all his time at his book stall or at the restaurant anymore.

This was my first attempt at writing a backstory for Kuroda, with an emphasis on trying to be canon compliant but, of course, the final twist is incompatible with canon.

Knight's Heart

"Do you understand, Kuroda?"

In the gentle, constant light of the beam emitted by the Starlink Stone, Kuroda could only nod and bow his head. Words to answer his father came to him, but none made it past the growing tightening sensation in his throat.

"You'll make a great Paladin," his father continued, "Remember, always follow the Wishing One."

The newly established broadcast station at the crown of the Grand Millewish Tree was playing cheerful music, blanketing the entirety of the Wishing Woods with a generally jovial mood. In her hanging treehouse in the residential area below on her day off from work, Afubo couldn't help but hum along as she dusted a row of trinkets on one of her shelves. She'd collected all sorts of oddities over her many lonely years, things like threads of purity that were the wrong colors at the ends, or a yellow glimmergrass flower she'd preserved in resin, or a jar of shrunken pollen puffs Durida had given her.

Were this just a month ago, she would have been annoyed to hear such happy songs drifting down from above, but today, she didn't mind it so much. She could even hear Yoyoda in the other room, tapping his hand against the frame of his bed in time with her humming, so it seemed she was not the only one who felt that way.

"Make sure the door is properly covered," said Chigda. "I do not wish for us to be disturbed again."

Avicinda flew to the door as instructed, taking care to pull the curtains as tight together as possible where Siyabo had left them loosely closed. It was odd, wasn't it, how little he'd felt upon seeing Captain Siyabo again, despite all she had done for him after his father had departed? But she was the one who had refused to let him stay and train...

"Avicinda, come here."

Chapter 1: Honesty

In a cavern in the highlands of the Wishing Woods due north of the Grand Millewish Tree, Giroda hovered by the carved doors that served as the only exit. He had only ever been outside once: the singular day after his awakening. He had spent that day learning to fly under the watchful gaze of his Uncle Babarada, taking joy in his newly grown limbs and the scent of the blooming Aurosa in the air around him. He often thought back to that day, replacing the dark walls of his prison with an imaginary bright blue sky and substituting the patter of water with the excited chatter of his fellow Faewish Sprites.

He shook his head; there was no time for such thinking right now. He kept himself as motionless as he could, ears perked against the slightest, miniscule gaps in the doors. By his careful count, the Paladins would be bringing him a Wishing Orb today, and Giroda knew he had to be ready as soon as the doors opened.

Several realizations had dawned on him a few days ago.
